Continuing to fuel Australia's future
26 July 2012

When you drive into a service station, there are enough things on your mind without having to worry about whether fuel is available, if it's the right quality and whether it is competitively priced. That's our job - these are tasks that we've looked after on behalf of Australian motorists for more than 100 years and the basis on which our strong reputation has been forged.

In the 1950s, we saw that the best way to deliver fuel to New South Wales was to have the ability to manufacture much of it locally. We built our Kurnell refinery in Sydney in 1956 and it became an important asset in our supply chain.

More than half a century later the market has changed. It has become clear that our Kurnell plant can no longer compete against larger, more complex Asian refineries.

We announced a proposal yesterday to close the Kurnell refinery in the second half of 2014 and convert it to a fuel import terminal. We also propose to invest in our Lytton refinery in Brisbane to make it more competitive.

Caltex is an Australian company that is listed on the local share market. Proposing to close our Kurnell refinery has been a hard decision for us, especially due to the impact on our refinery employees.

We believe this is the right decision for the long-term success of our company, our people and our customers.

While there are changes ahead for our company, there's one important thing to know…

...there will be no impact on you, our customers.

You can be assured that fuel prices are unrelated to whether or not Caltex operates a refinery.

The cost of fuel today is based on the imported price of product and that will not change due to our Sydney refinery closing. Further, the price at the bowser will continue to be driven by competition in the market place.

We remain committed to delivering high-quality, competitively priced fuel and petroleum based products wherever they are needed. That is at the core of what we do and a job you can leave to us.
