We aim to provide information that is accurate, relevant and easily accessible to stakeholders. This 2004 Environmental Health Safety and Community report covers the period from 1 January 2004 to 31 December 2004, and provides an update to the 2002-03 Environmental Health Safety and Community report (covering the period from 1 January 2002 to 31 December 2003).

Message from the Managing Director

The following is a summary of the first chapter of the Caltex Environment, Health, Safety & Community Report for 2004. Please use the links on the right to view or download a pdf file of the entire report.

Our major achievements over the period of this report are:

Financial position
2004 was a year of record profits for Caltex. The company achieved 77% higher profits than 2003 (on a replacement cost of sales operating profits basis).

Clean Fuels Project
The Clean Fuels Project was approved in February 2004, and construction of facilities to enable the production of cleaner fuels that will:
comply with standards mandated for 2006 under the Fuel Quality Standards Act 2000, and also
comply with the tougher standards for 2008 and 2009 as announced by the Australian Government in 2004.

Health, Safety and Environment
2004 was Caltex's best safety year on record with improvements in the key areas of Total Treated Injury Frequency Rate (TTIFR) and vehicle accidents. The TTIFR decreased in 2004 to 12 per million hours worked, compared to a TTIFR of 15 in 2003; whilst the total number of tanker truck and motor vehicle accidents across Caltex fell by 21% over the year.

Environmental performance also improved in 2004, with 15% less spills of product recorded.

Caltex and the Community
Caltex continued to support the Starlight Children's Foundation in 2004. Other community ventures include:

Awards for Innovation in the Vocation of Teaching
Sponsorship of the Australian Chamber Orchestra
Kurnell and Lytton refineries community partnership programs

Customers
The highest ever transport fuels sales volumes were recorded for 2004 and Caltex launched a new premium fuel Vortex 98. The Caltex Marketing business also worked to achieve a stronger customer focus, launching a new advertising tag line - We put more in.
