| As at May 2003, Caltex Australia employed a total of 3,022 people. We strive for a culture where all employees are recognised, rewarded and treated with fairness, respect and dignity.
Equal opportunity - 29% off our workforce are females (31 May 2003). The majority of employees are full-time (18% female). We maintain consistent promotion, transfer and termination policies. Pay levels are equitable between females and males performing the same roles.
Ongoing priorities include:
A review of recruitment and selection processes |
Implementation of a talent management strategy |
Review of reward and recognition programs |
Employee programs for health and well being - We've implemented a range of initiatives to support employees including:
Flexible sick leave arrangements |
Free counselling services |
Six weeks paid maternity and one week paternity and parental leave |
Yoga classes |
Free flu shots |
Training - Our employees have access to in-house training as well as the opportunity to be sponsored for further external study. A company wide system records training outcomes and provides self-guided training for employees. This system was further enhanced in 2003 and will continue to develop.
Conditions of employment - A revised performance management process (PMP) was implemented during 2003 to support improved performance of employees not covered by industrial awards. Employee survey results from 2003 recorded improvement in:
Valuing people and morale |
Initiative and involvement |
Cross functional cooperation |
Careers and recognition |
Communications with employees - We communicate with our employees through our intranet, "The Star" magazine, town hall meetings and newsletters.
Health and safety - Our long-term goal for health and safety is zero injuries. We made improvements on our performance in 2003 as shown in the graph below.

Our Total Treated Injury Frequency Rate (TTIFR) graph
We continue to strive for zero injuries using strategies such as:
Compulsory environmental health and safety training |
Incident free operations topic discussions |
Comprehensive return to work policy |
Motor vehicle and tanker trucks accidents - Motor vehicle and tanker truck accidents are the largest proportion of our workplace injuries.

In 2003 the Drive to Survive project was initiated to help improve drivers' performance through:

Clearer communication of expectations |
Increased focus on pre-trip planning |
Better alignment between on-site and off-site driving performance |
Fires - We manufacture, store and market a range of highly flammable products. Major fires were reduced from three in 2002 to one in 2003. The number of minor fires reported has increased since 2001. The marketing business has increased reporting of small fires.
