| Caltex Lubricating Oil Refinery (CLOR) when first built was known as the Australian Lubricating Oil Refinery and was owned by a consortium of three: Caltex (50%), Ampol (25%) and Golden Fleece (25%). The Caltex proportion increased to 75% in the early 1980s when Caltex bought out Golden Fleece.
CLOR produces a large variety of lubricating base oil products, ranging from light to heavy neutral oils (eg engine/gearbox oils and specialty products), through bright stock (eg grease making and blending) to a range of secondary naphthenic products (eg ink oils). CLOR also produces a range of waxes (eg for use in waterproofing, building products, cosmetics) and is the only Australian refinery that produces hard waxes. Significant technological improvements have been made at CLOR that allow the refinery to manufacture higher-grade base oils required for modern engines.
Typical CLOR production is 100,000 barrels a month. As CLOR's production can exceed domestic requirements, base oils are exported to a number of countries including New Zealand, the Philippines, Hong Kong and Thailand. CLOR competes with a number of regional refineries on export markets.
